Q. How many group shots do most people request?

The amount of group shots can vary greatly, typically this will only be a handful of the closest family and friends but it can be as much as 30 individual shots which can take up to 3-5 minutes each depending on the size of the group and how quickly the parties can be rallied - it is important to remember that this will take up some bridal party shoot if it is not allowed for and decided on prior to the day. Here is a list of typically requested groups.

  • The whole wedding party (venue dependant)

  • Bride with Bridesmaids

  • Groom with Groomsmen

  • Bride and Groom with their respective families

  • Bride and Groom with both families

  • Bride and Groom with respective sets of parents

  • Bride and Groom, Best Man and Chief Bridesmaid

  • Whole Bridal Party

  • Special friends or individuals that are close to the couple. Impromptu shots that may not have been planned - it is wise to leave a few unexpected slots for the day .

Q. What happens if it rains?

Wellington can have four seasons in any one day - this being said we always plan for unexpected eventualities by having one or two wet weather venues on hand. it may be important to note that some of these venues have a permit or entrance fee,

Q. Should I book an assistant or second photographer?

An assistant is invaluable for a photographer’s and makes him much more efficient by helping to carry equipment and quickly setup or control lighting. They also provide a second observer to spot things like unbuttoned jackets, wayward button holes and flyaway hair!

A second photographer will literally double the effort and angles, increasing the range and availability of event coverage. Examples of this would be covering multiple locations such as the separate venues of the Guys and Gals, capturing the getting ready shots or larger events which may have several things occurring at the same time. It is important to book these extras as soon as possible as they are subject to availability.

 Q. How to decide on a great location?

There are great locations for throughout Wellington and NZ, especially if you are a fan of Nature. Portraits can be shot almost anywhere and Character studies is usually shot where the subject feels most at home. In the case of a Wedding, the selected Wedding location may have special significance or be beautiful in itself which can be a great starting point for photos with personal significance.  Time of day and weather are also crucial the functionality of locations. It is always crucial to have a few more venues than what is required. The best locations often holds personal significance to the couple. Where possible I prefer to visit multiple locations with the couple in person before the big day. It’s worth noting that most indoor venues require a permit or fee and may need booking if privacy is required.

Q. Does the time of day we have our ceremony matter?

The best light for photography tends to be towards the beginning or the end of the day at sunrise and leading up to sunset, typically during most peoples function. Light is one of the principle considerations for a photographer, but that being said we become adept at working with what we have at any time of day.

Q. When do you require payment?

I take an agreed retainer, usually 25%, at time of booking and the balance a week prior to the event day.

Q. How much will it cost to hire you- what packages do you offer?

The type of photography event will determine the final cost. Wedding, Family and Infant packages are discussed above and is a guide only - we can come to an arrangement that suits your budget and specific needs for the day.

Q. Do we need to meet prior to our wedding?

I would like to meet wedding couples on at least one occasion prior to the big day where possible. It’s a great opportunity to get to know each other and discuss your needs in detail. I am also happy to visit locations with wedding couples and take some test photos in situ – these shots will give you some practice and ideas of what you like before the big day and give you an idea of what works for you.

Q. Are you happy to travel internationally to cover weddings?

I love shooting new locations and I am more than happy to travel internationally at cost, please contact me directly to discuss.

Q. Do we get digital copies of our files?

Yes with the exception of the Marble and Quartz packages. You will get high resolution copies of all unique shots taken during your wedding or event. Your photo bundle will have all your shots in colour and black and white along with a range of creative colour treatments and cropping. Resolution is from a maximum of 20 megapixel depending on treatment in post-production.

Q. How long does it take to produce our wedding photography?

Most of the photographic work occurs after the great dayand have three stages of delivery, depending on the package you engaged the photographer to deliver:

Firstly, approximately a week after the wedding day there will be a snapshot of highlights, this will enable the couple to post some photos to their social media accounts and use some of the photos for their thank you notes to friends and family.

Examples of the quality leather albums - variations in colour, shape and type is available.

Examples of the quality leather albums - variations in colour, shape and type is available.

Secondly there is the slideshow presentation which will encapsulate the full wedding day. Most commercial "professional photographers" that do wedding photography for a living, put your photos through an automated algorithm which creates 4-6 variants which they then select the ones they like from with minimal effort or as much reduced effort as possible to reduce their outlay and investment of time on your photos. At Foto Diem we believe in the art and treat every photo individually to enhance the very best in each captured moment. We will invest upward of 60h in the typical full day wedding  event after the actual event. From this we then advise our clients to expect their package presentation within 4-6 weeks after the wedding.

Thirdly deliver of specific Albums, Canvases, framed photos etc. Each of these have a specific duration and are usually from the approved decisions made by the couple from the above two deliverables. These deliverables can take anywhere from days to weeks to procure.

Q. Do you post our work on-line?

I can post the photo's to most social media and cloud storage of your preference. I do not Blog my customer's photos unless they have a specific requirement.

Q. Can you produce wedding albums?

Wedding albums are included in some packages - Various options are available and personal taste will greatly affect your preference. I prefer the old style actual photo paper printing as I believe this yields a much better result compared to the magazine type printing available from most of the bulk online options available. I believe presentations is key to the product that I will be happy to put my name to.

Q. Where are you located?

I am based in Lower Hutt, Wellington, NZ.

 Q. How long will you hold onto our photos.

I always recommend that you back your photos to several secure locations. I may keep some location photos but it is unlikely that I would keep your photo bundle for a prolonged period.

Q. Can our guests take photos during the day?

As your big day we will work with whatever you want -  We can discuss the associated risks and options if you would like. Options are: a technology freeze or if you want photos form your guests during specific or all portions of the wedding.

Q. How many photos will be taken during the day?

There is no limit to the number of shots taken, the longer that I am there for the greater the number of shots. I would typically expect to produce from 150 edited images for most full day packages.

Q. What equipment do use?

I use high quality Canon L  series professional lenses, Canon DSLRs and Speedlight flashguns. Professional quality equipment in the right hands will produce superior images time after time.

Q. How far will you travel to cover my wedding?

There is no limit to the distance I will travel, packages described above include travel as far at Masterton and the Kapiti Coast, extra mileage is calculated at 94c per km and can be discussed at the time.

Q. Do you do retouching?

I have years retouching experience and apply this knowledge to all of my weddings in post-production with an eye on exceptional images as the outcome. Retouching your photos will remove or blend things like spots, tones and blemishes where necessary using Photoshop and Lightroom. Examples of this can be seen in the Portfolio samples, Additional hours of specialised retouching can be purchased for $50ph - most of packages include all the time that is required for retouching.

Q. Do you have a backup photographer if you are ill?

Yes. It will however take a monumentus illness to keep me from turning up on the day.

Q. Why should I choose a professional photographer?

Professional photographers are passionate about what they do - Photography is their art! They invest years in training, in my case close on 20 years, and quality equipment to give them the best outcome time after time. They spend vast amounts of time to ensure that they do your wedding justice. Wedding photography is a challenging genre that mixes virtually all genre' within the photography world - you have fashion, portraiture, character studies, landscapes,  industrial (food and décor) and photo journalism all mixed in with fast passed greatly varying conditions that cannot be recreated - All of this means that your Photographer of choice needs to be dynamic and versatile, unobtrusive but guiding.

Your wedding will be one of your greatest and most important days in your life and as such it will be an honour for me to be a part of it. I strive to not just capture the events of the day but also the memories and the emotion of the day, keeping engagements light, personable and unobtrusive where possible.

If you have any questions not answered here please feel free to contact me directly, not only will I answer them but unless you have an objection I will add them to the list of Frequently Asked Questions!
